United Gulf Construction Co. (UGCC), through its branch office in Libya, has restarted construction on its $200 million USD integrated infrastructure project in the western city of Sabratha, Libya. The Client, Housing and Infrastructure Board (HIB), requested UGCC to resume design and construction activities for the large-scale project in 2013, after the works were halted as a result of the 2011 revolution. The original contract, which began in 2010, includes design and implementation of all infrastructure works over an 844 hectare area, consisting of roads, sewer and storm-water networks, potable water supply network, as well as sewer and storm-water pumping stations. The Client has also issued a variation order to add electricity distribution, fiber optics/telecommunications, and one of the first natural gas distribution networks in all of Libya. It is anticipated that the final contract value will reach in excess of $350 million USD and the expected duration of the project is 40 months. The works shall be supervised by the Libyan branch of consultant Ranhill, and the program manager is the American consultancy firm, AECOM. UGCC is one of the first international firms to resume operations in Libya, in an effort to aide in the redevelopment of the country following the 2011 revolution. Upon completion of the project, Sabratha shall be one of the first Libyan cities to have modern, state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities.
